WordPress vs Next.js for a Business Website: Costs, Editing and Maintenance

WordPress and Next.js are not equivalent products. WordPress includes a content management system. Next.js is a development framework that needs an editing system if non-developers will publish content. Compare complete proposed setups rather than treating either name as a guarantee of speed or quality.

Match the editing experience

An established WordPress workflow can suit teams familiar with its editor and ecosystem. A Next.js site can connect to a CMS with structured fields, permissions and previews. In either case, ask to perform your everyday tasks before approving the solution.

Consider a team publishing articles in French and Dutch. It needs a clear translation process, previews and metadata fields, not just a promise that the site is multilingual. Specify those functions in the brief regardless of technology.

Compare maintenance responsibilities

WordPress proposals should explain core, theme and plugin updates, backups and compatibility checks. Next.js proposals should explain framework and package updates, deployment management, CMS maintenance and integration monitoring. Both approaches require ongoing care.

A small site with few integrations has a different support burden from an order-processing platform. Ask for a maintenance scope tied to the proposed architecture. Avoid comparing a managed WordPress package against an unsupported custom build.

Evaluate performance and cost

Design decisions, images, scripts, caching and hosting all affect performance. Request checks on representative pages and mobile journeys. A framework name alone is not a performance report.

Compare build cost, licences, hosting, maintenance and changes over an agreed period. A custom interface may justify development work when it supports distinctive workflows; familiar CMS features may be more economical when standard functionality fits. Ask how content exports and how another provider could take over.

Questions before commissioning

  • Who can edit content, and what can they safely change?
  • Which paid dependencies remain necessary?
  • Who owns deployments, backups and updates?
  • Can you demonstrate our required languages and forms?

Choose the complete operating model your team can live with. Request two scoped approaches if both technologies can meet the same brief.

A brief you can use to compare proposals

Use the following as an illustrative procurement check, not a promise of results or a fixed package. Ask the provider to turn it into named deliverables, exclusions and a test you can witness before accepting the work.

Ask the future editor to change a service page and identify who handles updates, hosting and emergency support.

A published example to inspect

A website for building insulation and renovation of the building envelope, presenting services and guiding homeowners towards a quotation. The navigation connects insulation, façades, roofing and windows with guides and quotation entry points, letting visitors start with their own renovation needs.

Inspect the project: iSolaris

This published example illustrates presentation and visitor flow. It is not evidence of a conversion uplift, a ranking position or a price for your own project. Compare the scope you need with the capabilities actually demonstrated, then ask what would be different for your business.

Primary reference

Next.js documentation. Use the reference to check terminology and platform requirements when briefing a provider; the proposal still needs to define your own implementation and responsibilities.
